Confab

Confab explores the intersection between live and recorded music. It was commissioned by Drew Leslie for the International Trombone Festival. Our technology is changing at a rapid pace and the way in which we consume music and experience life changes frequently. In this piece, the solo trombonist performs with an audio track of previously recorded samples. The audio track is entirely created from trombone samples. I worked with Drew for several hours sampling recordings of him playing melodic fragments, individual pitches, and other extended sounds. Afterwards, these samples were manipulated to create a wide variety of sounds. The audio creates a means of unity, as well as contrast between the live and recorded sounds. The interaction between the two sound sources can be heard as a complex conversation between the past and future.
